Mental Health and Hospitality

With September being the month where Mental Health Awareness Week falls, we are taking the opportunity to bring together a panel of thought leaders and change makers to open up conversation and discuss mental health in relation to ourselves, to the community and to the hospitality industry. The three-course meal that complements our conversation has been curated by our Head Chef, Chino Salazar and champions local legends, waste reduction and by-product usage. It has been designed to celebrate the idea of interactivity and social eating as a way of breaking down barriers and encouraging people to come together.

JAMIE ALLEN, Founder of The Taranaki Retreat:

Taranaki Retreat is a suicide prevention initiative that provides a ‘space to breathe’ for individuals or wh​ānau going through tough times, located in rural Taranaki. Jamie Allen, the former Dean of Taranaki Cathedral and his wife Suzy started work on the Retreat back in 2014, with the official opening in March 2017, and live on-site with their children. Their aim – to provide a safe, friendly and welcoming place for individuals or whole families who are dealing with tragedy, mental illness or life-challenges. They are making a difference in their community, and are demonstrating that there is hope in togetherness. A Charitable Trust which relies heavily on volunteer involvement, community fundraising and donations, Taranaki Retreat is a place where people in desperate situations are given a lifeline.

KYLE MACDONALD, DIRECTOR of The Robert Street Clinic

Kyle is an experienced psychotherapist focusing on mental health, addiction, domestic violence and anxiety issues in the community. Kyle is a prominent advocate for mental health awareness in New Zealand, writes a weekly column in the NZ Herald, co-hosts the Nutters Club on Newstalk ZB, is a regular panellist on TV3s The Project, Director of The Robert Street Clinic and Chair of the Board of Mike King’s The Key to Life Trust. He is also a City Vision candidate for the Auckland DHB in the upcoming local body elections.

JOE O’CONNELL, EXECUTIVE CHEF and SUSTAINABILITY CO-ORDINATOR at Ozone Coffee Roasters

Joe has stayed true to his Kiwi roots since he joined Ozone Coffee Roasters in mid 2014, and has played an integral part of the success behind our global menu offering. The former Waitara High School student, and WelTec City and Guilds graduate worked at a range of restaurants in Taranaki and Wellington including Waiau Estate, Boulcott St Bistro and Arbitrageur before heading to London, where he is currently based. As our Executive Chef and Sustainability Co-ordinator, Joe oversees our global kitchen team and designs menus that focus heavily on nutrition and flavour. Joe is cognisant of the importance of sustainability in relation to people, and leads his team by encouraging personal wellbeing, work life balance and self-care with the overall aim of reducing anxiety and mental health issues.
