Maragogype Coffee Beans
Maragogype (pronounced mar-rah-go-zheh-peh) is a natural mutation of Typica, first identified in the Maragogipe region of Bahia, Brazil. It is one of the most visually distinctive coffee plants in existence: the trees grow unusually tall, with oversized leaves and notably large beans — earning it the nickname "elephant bean" in the trade. In the cup, Maragogype tends toward a lighter body than most Typica descendants, with mild acidity and a clean, nuanced profile that rewards careful brewing. Because the large bean size requires adjusted grind settings and extraction times, it suits experienced home brewers who want to experiment. Yields are low and cultivation is demanding, so genuinely good Maragogype lots are uncommon. We source it when quality and provenance justify it.
