The Chemex coffeemaker was designed in 1941 by chemist Peter Schlumbohm and has barely changed since. Its hourglass form in borosilicate glass, combined with the brand's own thick bonded filter papers, produces one of the cleanest and clearest cups available from any manual brewing method: the filters remove oils and fine sediment that pass through thinner papers, resulting in a bright, flavourful brew with a light body and no bitterness. The brewer range runs across three series: the Classic Wooden Collar, available in 3 to 10 cup sizes and the most widely recognised version; the Glass Handle Series, which replaces the wooden collar with an integrated glass handle for a cleaner aesthetic; and the Handblown Series, individually made by artisans in Croatia with subtle variation between each piece. On filters, Chemex produces several formats: pre-folded square filters (FS-100) and pre-folded circle filters (FC-100) are the easiest to use; unfolded circle (FP-1) and half-moon (FP-2) papers are available for those who prefer to fold their own; and natural unbleached versions of both square and half-moon formats are available for those who prefer an unbleached paper.
