Longberry Java Coffee Beans

Longberry, also known as Java, is a Typica-type coffee varietal believed to have its origins in Ethiopia, where elongated bean shapes occur naturally among indigenous arabica populations. Its most common name comes from those distinctive beans, which are noticeably longer than most arabica varieties and similar in form to Geisha. The name Java reflects its historical movement through colonial-era trade routes, though the two names are used inconsistently across the trade: some roasters list it as Longberry, others as Java, and occasionally both.

Longberry Java is not widely cultivated: it has low yields and limited disease resistance, which makes it a poor fit for most commercial farming operations. Where it does appear, it tends to be on farms with the capacity to manage difficult varietals carefully, often at altitude. In the cup, well-grown Longberry produces clean, complex coffee with delicate acidity, floral aromatics, and a fruit clarity that reflects its Typica lineage. It shares some characteristics with Geisha and Typica, though it expresses them with its own distinct character.
