Typica Coffee Beans

Typica is the foundational Arabica variety. It originated in Ethiopia, travelled to Yemen in the 15th or 16th century, and was carried from there to Java by Dutch traders in the 1690s. From that single shipment, Typica spread through the botanical gardens of Amsterdam and Paris to the Caribbean and across the Americas, becoming the dominant coffee plant in the world until the 20th century. The name means 'typical' in the sense of 'standard' — it was, for centuries, simply what coffee was.

As a cup, Typica at its best is a benchmark for clarity and elegance: clean, sweet, and floral, with bright but refined acidity and a lighter body that expresses terroir as clearly as any variety in cultivation. It is also low-yielding, tall, disease-susceptible, and labour-intensive to harvest — which is why it has been largely replaced by higher-producing varieties across most of the world. Where it persists, in Peru, Jamaica, Hawaii, and pockets of Central America, it commands a quality premium that justifies the challenge.

Almost every variety in our varietal guide traces its lineage back to Typica, including Maragogype, Caturra, and Pacamara. We source it selectively when genuinely exceptional lots are available.
