Ethiopia: Telila Yukro
Telila Washing Station
-
Jimma is home to the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC). This is the home of coffee plant research and development in Ethiopia. Coffee plant varietals is a tricky conversation in Ethiopia, where there is a huge range of genetic diversity in plants, and we often have to describe them as “heirloom”. These might be truly wild plants, but in many cases these are actually plants which came originally from the JARC selective breeding programs. Two of the most famous selections from JARC, popular throughout Ethiopia and which make up this lot are JARC 74110 & JARC 74112 (catchy name, right!!).
Each lot from Telila lists the village/s that the producers who contributed to it came from. From the first time we tried some Telila coffees, we loved the lot from Yukro village in particular and we're excited to have a lot from there again this year. Even more impressively, we can tell you that this lot came from 3 small holder producers in Yukro - Zuberu Aba Garo, Sabito Usman and Zelalem Weldu.
The cup starts with a burst of orange blossom, before juicy fresh peach floods in on the finish. A hint of black tea and white sugar comes on the aftertaste, whilst its all got a light but silky texture which perfectly compliments the flavours.
