Catuai Coffee Beans
Catuai is a hybrid of Caturra and Mundo Novo, developed by the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas in Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s. It was bred primarily for agronomic performance: compact plant size, resistance to wind damage, and high yield. Those qualities made it exceptionally practical to farm, and it now accounts for a significant share of coffee cultivation across Brazil and Central America. As a cup, Catuai tends toward clean, balanced profiles rather than dramatic complexity. It's a reliable producer with good sweetness and mild acidity, making it well-suited to espresso and as a component in blends. The variety's cup quality is sensitive to altitude and processing: high-grown, carefully processed Catuai can produce genuinely interesting results, particularly as washed lots from Bolivia and Guatemala where producers have invested in fermentation control and selective picking.
