Gloria Mercedes Rodríguez Fontan, a fourth-generation coffee grower, oversees six small farms in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec range, including Finca Nejapa. Inherited by Gloria's father in the '50s, Finca Nejapa spans 18.2 hectares, with 6.3 dedicated to coffee across three plots: Los Vientos, Santa Marta, and Roma.
Situated on the Laguna de Las Ninfas slopes, the farm offers a stunning view of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec range, Itzalco volcano, and the Pacific Ocean. Gloria employs 35 people during harvest, maintaining a year-round team of 15 for essential tasks. She emphasises specialty coffee standards, ensuring ripe cherries, careful milling, and skilled labour. Gloria pays above minimum wage, providing incentives and bonuses based on weeks of labour.
Her dedication extends to preserving the environment with reforested land, fostering optimal growing conditions. Gloria works closely with her farm foreman, Antonio Avelino, overseeing every step to maintain exceptional coffee quality.
