Light Roast Coffee Beans

Light roast is the most delicate end of the roast spectrum, developed to just before the end of first crack - the point where the bean's cell structure is still relatively dense and the roast has had minimal time to transform the natural sugars. The beans retain most of their origin character at this level, which is what makes light roasting so interesting and so unforgiving in equal measure.

In appearance, light roasted beans are typically smaller and more uneven than darker roasts, with a dry, beige-to-light-brown surface and no oil. The body is usually lighter and the sweetness simpler - this roast level tends to suit coffees with especially pronounced floral or fruit characteristics, or those processed using experimental methods like natural, anaerobic, or carbonic maceration that add complexity at the green stage.

Light roasts are often appreciated through filter brewing methods - V60, Chemex, or Clever Dripper - where the clarity of the cup allows the more nuanced flavours to come through.
