Las Alasitas is the largest farm in Finas Buena Vista, spanning 20 hectares across Bolivia’s Caranavi region. Its high altitude and fertile soils make Caranavi a hub for brilliant and unique Bolivian coffee production.
Alasitas translates to “buy me” in the country’s official language Aymaran, but there’s much more to why we source Bolivian coffee from this incredible family-owned farm.
Owned by the Rodriguez family, Las Alasitas was born from the family’s dedication to increasing sustainable coffee production in a country that may have otherwise produced very little. Daniela and Pedro Rodriguez and their families sourced Bolivian coffee from small producers for three decades, but the steady decline of production put the sustainability of their export business in jeopardy; they decided to change things for the better.
In 2014, the family bought land in Caranavi and began planting Red Caturra, Java and Geisha coffee on their farms where they own their mills. They focus on highlighting their sustainable farming practices and educating other producers to help increase overall volume. They introduced a sustainability program, “Sol de la Mañana” for producers who supply to their mills. It was built on the principles of economical sustainability, social understanding, and environmental awareness for the community.
The future of Bolivian coffee production is at risk of disappearing without people like the Rodriguez family, and we’re thankful to support them.
