Barista Hustle Tamper 58.4mm, Black
-
The Barista Hustle Tamper is a 58.4mm espresso tamper from the coffee education platform founded by Matt Perger, sized to fit VST precision baskets exactly. That extra 0.4mm over a standard 58mm tamper closes the gap between the tamper and the basket wall, so you compress the coffee evenly right out to the edges. Less loose coffee around the rim means fewer easy paths for water to rush through and a more even extraction. If you're already using precision baskets, or chasing more consistent shots from a 58mm machine, it's one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your espresso workflow.
Rather than a heavy all-steel build, it pairs a flat 304 stainless steel base with a handle made from military-spec type III hard anodised aluminium, keeping the total weight to around 250g. That's lighter than many solid steel tampers, which means less strain on your wrist over a busy morning on bar or a long weekend of dialling in. The handle has just enough texture to stay secure in wet hands, and the base is designed to be replaceable, so the tamper can keep going long after a base has seen better days.
The clever bit is the double flange between the base and the handle. It stops the tamper creating a vacuum as you lift it away, so it comes off the puck cleanly without tugging at the coffee bed, and it helps keep the tamper vertical as you press. It comes in a padded zip case, handy if it travels with you. Pair it with our VST Precision Filter Baskets for the exact fit it was designed around.

Why is the Barista Hustle Tamper 58.4mm rather than 58mm?
Precision baskets like VST have a slightly larger internal diameter than the nominal 58mm. A 58.4mm tamper fills that space more completely, so the coffee around the edge of the basket gets compressed as firmly as the coffee in the middle. That leaves fewer weak spots for water to channel through.
Will the Barista Hustle Tamper fit my espresso machine?
It's made for 58mm portafilters, the standard size on commercial machines and many home machines such as the Lelit Victoria and Sage Dual Boiler. It won't fit 54mm portafilters, which are found on machines like the Sage Barista Pro and Duo Temp Pro. Because it's sized for precision baskets, it can be a very snug fit in some standard baskets, so check your basket's internal diameter if you're unsure.
Does it work with VST baskets?
Yes, this is exactly what it was designed for. The 58.4mm base matches VST precision baskets, and it works just as well with other precision baskets such as Pullman and La Marzocco. We stock VST Precision Filter Baskets from 15g to 25g.
What does the double flange do?
When a tamper fits a basket closely, lifting it straight out can create a vacuum that pulls at the surface of the puck. The double flange between the base and handle stops that from happening, so the tamper releases cleanly and your coffee bed stays intact.
Is a lighter tamper better?
Tamping pressure comes from you, not from the weight of the tamper, so a heavy tamper doesn't give you a better puck. At around 250g, the Barista Hustle Tamper is easier on your wrist and hand, which really adds up if you're pulling a lot of shots.
Is the base flat or convex?
The base is completely flat. A flat base gives you an evenly compressed coffee bed with a level surface, which helps water flow evenly through the puck.
Can I replace the base?
Yes, the 304 stainless steel base is designed to be replaceable, so you don't need a whole new tamper if the base gets damaged or worn. Get in touch with our team if you need a replacement.
How should I clean my tamper?
Wipe it with a dry or lightly damp cloth after use, and avoid the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergents can dull and damage anodised aluminium over time, so hand care will keep the handle looking its best.
