  • There's something deeply satisfying about pairing two natural products that demand patience and craft. The Comandante C40 MK4 in American Cherry brings together the precision of German engineering and the warmth of one of North America's most prized hardwoods. Each grinder wears a veneer of genuine American Cherry, hand-laminated onto the stainless steel body before being waxed and polished with meticulous care. Because every piece of cherry wood carries its own unique grain pattern, no two grinders are ever quite the same. The one you hold is yours alone.

American Cherry is celebrated by woodworkers for its remarkable ability to transform over time. When new, the veneer presents a lighter, pinkish-gold tone with subtle grain patterns. As months pass and the wood is exposed to light and air, it gradually deepens into the rich, reddish-brown hue that has made cherry a favourite of fine furniture makers for centuries. Your grinder will age alongside your coffee journey, developing a lustrous patina that tells its own story. It's a fitting partnership with specialty coffee, where time, care, and attention to detail make all the difference.

Beneath that beautiful exterior sits the legendary Nitro Blade burr set, the world's first heptagonal conical burr designed specifically for specialty coffee. The individually sharpened cutting edges slice cleanly through beans rather than crushing them, producing exceptional particle uniformity with minimal fines. Whether you're grinding for a delicate filter brew or dialling in espresso, the stepped click system locks your preferred setting firmly in place. The C40 has earned its reputation as the weapon of choice for discerning home brewers and World Brewers Cup champions alike, and the American Cherry edition adds a tactile, organic dimension to that daily ritual.

  • Why does my grinder look different from the photos?

Each American Cherry grinder features a veneer cut from natural wood, meaning the structure and tone of colour will vary from piece to piece. This isn't a flaw; it's what makes your grinder genuinely unique. Some may show more prominent grain patterns, while others display subtle variations in shade. Embrace the individuality.

Will the wood change colour over time?

Yes, and beautifully so. American Cherry is renowned for its ability to deepen and mature with exposure to light and air. What begins as a lighter pinkish-gold tone will gradually develop into a rich, warm reddish-brown. This natural aging process is most noticeable in the first six months but continues for years, giving your grinder an ever-evolving character.

How do I care for the wood veneer?

Comandante offers a Wood Balm Care set specifically for their premium wood models. Regular application will help maintain the lustre and protect the veneer. Avoid submerging the grinder in water or exposing it to excessive moisture. A soft, dry cloth is ideal for everyday cleaning.

What brewing methods can I use with the C40 MK4?

The C40 MK4 handles the full spectrum of grind sizes. As a starting point: Turkish coffee sits around 5-8 clicks, espresso 8-12 clicks, moka pot 13-15 clicks, filter and pour-over methods 20-28 clicks, French press 32-35 clicks, and cold brew around 34 clicks. The click system lets you return to your preferred setting with precision.

What makes the Nitro Blade burr set special?

The Nitro Blade is the world's first heptagonal (seven-sided) conical burr developed specifically for specialty coffee. Crafted from high-nitrogen stainless steel with a fine martensitic micro-crystal matrix, the burrs feature individually sharpened cutting edges that slice through beans rather than crushing them. This delivers exceptional particle uniformity and minimal fines across all grind settings.

    What's included in the box?

Each C40 MK4 American Cherry comes with one brown glass Bean Jar and one clear polymer Bean Jar (both holding approximately 40g), an attachable crank with oak knob, and sustainable packaging with a comprehensive manual.

Is the polymer jar really unbreakable?

Comandante describe it as "basically unbreakable," and it's certainly far more durable than glass. It's also consistently weighted for competition use and offers heat insulation, so it can double as a cup when brewing on the go.

How does the MK4 differ from earlier versions?

The MK4 features a redesigned engine frame that eliminates trapped beans entirely, improved robustness and capacity, the addition of the polymer bean jar alongside the glass option, and sustainable packaging. All parts remain backwards compatible with the MK3.

Where is the American Cherry wood sourced?

American Cherry (Prunus serotina) grows predominantly in the eastern United States, with much of the finest timber coming from states like Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. Comandante source their wood from responsible forestry operations.

Where is the Comandante C40 manufactured?

The C40 MK4 is 100% Made in Germany. Comandante is a family-run company based just outside Munich, Bavaria. The oak crank knobs are handmade by craftsmen in Germany's Black Forest, and the wood veneers are hand-laminated, waxed, and polished by Comandante's own team.
