  • The Timemore U French Press is a stripped-back take on the classic cafetière, built for full-bodied immersion coffee with as little fuss as possible. Timemore is best known for precision hand grinders and brewing scales, and that same attention to detail shows here in a clean, minimal design that suits a desk as much as a kitchen counter. It holds 450ml, enough for two generous mugs or three smaller cups.

The body is borosilicate glass, which handles freshly boiled water without fuss, paired with stainless steel and food-grade silicone parts. At the heart of the plunger is a high-density mesh filter with a 0.35mm mesh size. It keeps grounds out of your cup and cuts the sludge you get at the bottom of a lesser press. Like any metal-filtered brewer, it lets through the oils a paper filter would trap. That's where the rich body and rounded sweetness come from.

At 340g, the U French Press is compact and light: take it to the office, pack it for a weekend away, or tuck it into a cupboard between brews. It handles loose-leaf tea just as well as coffee. Choose black or white, grab a bag of our freshly roasted filter coffee ground coarse, and you're four minutes from a proper cup.

  • Is a French press the same as a cafetière?
Yes. "Cafetière" is the name most commonly used in the UK, while "French press" is more common in the US and elsewhere. Both describe the same full-immersion brewer, where coffee steeps in hot water before a mesh plunger separates the grounds.
How many cups does the Timemore U French Press make?
With a 450ml capacity, it makes around two mugs or three smaller cups. Good for one or two people.
What grind size should I use?
A coarse grind, similar in texture to sea salt, works best. Grinding too fine can make plunging difficult, push more fine particles through the mesh and lead to a bitter, over-extracted cup.
What's a good French press recipe to start with?
Try 25g of coarsely ground coffee to 400g of water just off the boil. Stir gently, place the lid on and steep for four minutes, then press the plunger down slowly and pour straight away. From there, adjust the dose or steep time to suit your taste.
Will I get sediment in my cup?
The 0.35mm high-density mesh filter does a good job of keeping grounds out, but all metal-filtered brewers let some very fine particles through. A coarse, even grind, and leaving the last few millilitres in the press, will give you the cleanest cup.
Can I brew tea in the U French Press?
Yes. Timemore designed it to work for both coffee and tea, and the mesh filter suits loose-leaf tea well. Give it a thorough clean between uses if you don't want coffee flavours carrying over.
Is the glass safe to use with boiling water?
The body is borosilicate glass, chosen for brewers because it copes well with the heat of freshly boiled water. As with any glass brewer, avoid sudden extreme temperature changes, such as pouring boiling water into a press straight from the fridge.
How do I clean the Timemore U French Press?
Tip out the used grounds (they're great for the compost), then rinse the glass and plunger with warm water. Every so often, separate the mesh filter and wash it with warm, soapy water to remove coffee oils that can build up and taint future brews.
Is it good for travel or the office?
At 340g and with a compact footprint, it's easy to pack for work, holidays or anywhere you've got access to hot water.
What's the difference between the black and white versions?
Only the colour. Both versions share the same 450ml capacity, 0.35mm mesh filter and materials, so it comes down to which suits your kitchen or setup.
