From the lush, volcanic highlands of Muyinga Province in northeastern Burundi comes a coffee that is as meaningful in origin as it is in impact. Burundi Hafi represents a deep connection to land, community, and progress. It is the result of generations of farming knowledge, cultivated at elevations between 1,200 and 1,950 meters, where rich volcanic soil and a temperate climate provide ideal growing conditions. The name Hafi, meaning “near” in Kirundi, reflects the farmers’ aspiration to have a local wet mill. This dream has become a reality, reducing the burden of transporting coffee cherries over long distances and improving the quality and consistency of the final product.
This coffee is exported by JNP Coffee, a company founded by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, a Burundian-American entrepreneur committed to uplifting coffee-growing communities in her homeland. Central to this mission is the Dushime™ program, which means “let’s be thankful” in Kirundi. Through this initiative, JNP Coffee pays quality premiums directly to women producers. These premiums support financial independence, education, and leadership opportunities for women in rural Burundi. The program fosters a more equitable and sustainable coffee industry by recognizing and rewarding the essential contributions of women throughout the supply chain.
Bringing the classic flavours of cherry and chocolate together, this cup starts on dark cherry jam before softening into ripe plums, then finishing with a flourish of dark chocolate.
