Medium Roast Coffee Beans
Medium roast is where a lot of specialty coffee finds its sweet spot. Roasted to just after first crack - the audible pop that happens as the bean's cell structure expands and moisture escapes - medium roasts develop complexity and sweetness without losing the origin character that makes each coffee unique. The result is typically a balanced cup with fruit, caramel, or simple sugar notes and a clean finish. At this roast level the beans take on an uneven brown appearance, often with slightly darker patches, and the surface stays dry rather than oily. In roasting terminology this sits around what's known as a City Roast - past the lightest development but well before the deeper caramelisation of darker profiles. Medium roasts work well across most brewing methods - filter, espresso, and immersion - and are a good starting point if you're exploring specialty coffee for the first time.
