Maracatu Coffee Beans
Maracatu (also known as Maracaturra) is a hybrid of Maragogype and Caturra, developed in Brazil to address Maragogype's notoriously low yields while keeping as much of its distinctive character as possible. It inherited the oversized beans, large leaves, and large cherries of Maragogype, along with some of Caturra's adaptability. Yields are still low by commercial standards, but meaningfully better than pure Maragogype. It's found predominantly in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Mexico, and performs best at 800 metres and above. In the cup, Maracatu delivers bright, complex acidity with well-developed fruit and medium to medium-full body. El Salvador in particular has developed a strong reputation for the variety, producing lots with pronounced stone fruit and tropical characteristics. Like Maragogype, the large beans require careful attention on the roast curve. Read more: Our Maracatu varietal guide · Maragogype · All varietal guides
