The Origins of La Linda and the Buena Vista Project
Finca La Linda is the farm upon which the Los Rodriguez project was founded. It marked the beginning of Agricafe’s journey into producing its own high-quality coffee, rather than solely sourcing it from other producers. Nestled between two forest-covered mountains in Caranavi, a region famous for its fertile soils and high altitude, La Linda enjoys a subtropical climate, rich soil, and a privileged location - making it an ideal environment for growing exceptional coffee.
The name La Linda, meaning “the pretty one”, was inspired by the first nursery of Java trees planted on the farm, which flourished beautifully. One morning, as Pedro enjoyed his coffee while gazing at the breathtaking landscape, he thought to himself how beautiful it all was - and so, the name was born.
La Linda was the founding farm of the Buena Vista Project and the first to bear fruit. It has now been in production for Agricafe for over 9 years and, alongside this Java lot, the farm also grows Catuai, Typica, SL28, and Bourbon. The lessons learned at La Linda helped shape the plans for all future farms and became the foundation for the Sol de la Mañana program.
For five years, Los Rodriguez used the farm as a place to breathe, brew coffee, and connect with nature. During this time, they dreamed of transforming the struggling Bolivian coffee industry, which was facing a steep decline in production and widespread farm abandonment. La Linda became one of Agricafe’s greatest success stories—a place where experimentation, innovation, and resilience came together.
The Bolivian Coffee Landscape and Agricafe’s Response
Due to many complications and challenges within the Bolivian coffee industry, many of the smaller farms Agricafe once worked with are no longer producing coffee. This shift posed significant challenges, especially for Agricafe, who had built long-standing relationships with these growers.
In response, around 2012, Agricafe began farming themselves to maintain a consistent supply for their export business and to demonstrate what could be achieved with modern techniques and a scientific farming approach. As of 2024, they manage 12 farms under the Buena Vista Project, with La Linda being the very first.
A Hidden Gem in the Amazon Jungle
Finca La Linda is tucked away in the Amazon jungle, enjoying a perfect microclimate for Java coffee varieties, which grow vigorously and appear incredibly healthy. The farm is also a haven for wildlife, thanks to a nearby stream that provides water for many animals. 60% of the farm is maintained as a natural reserve, preserving its ecological richness and beauty.
La Linda is home to the mother plants of all Los Rodriguez coffee varieties. Every variety was first planted here to develop seeds before being expanded to other farms. The area is rich in biodiversity, with exotic animals and birds roaming freely.
