Kalita Wave Filter Papers
-
The Kalita Wave filter is one of the most respected names in specialty coffee brewing, and for good reason. Designed in Japan by a company that started making paper filters in 1958, these distinctive wave-shaped papers have become a staple in specialty cafés and home brewing setups worldwide. As the official UK importer of Kalita products, we stock the full range of Wave filters online and at our roastery.
What sets the Kalita Wave apart from standard flat or conical filters is its patented 20-wave construction. These crimped edges minimise contact between the paper and the dripper walls, creating air pockets that help maintain a stable brewing temperature throughout extraction. The result is more consistent heat retention and a cleaner, more balanced cup. The flat-bottom design promotes an even coffee bed, which reduces the risk of channelling and makes the Kalita Wave particularly forgiving for those still refining their pour-over technique.
The filters are manufactured from oxygen-bleached pulp and carry FSC certification, making them both flavour-neutral and responsibly sourced. Whether you're using a Kalita Wave dripper in glass, ceramic, or stainless steel, or pairing them with compatible flat-bottom brewers like the Orea, Origami Dripper, April Brewer, or Fellow Stagg [X], these papers deliver reliable performance brew after brew. Pair them with our pour-over brew guides to get the most out of every cup.

Do I need to rinse Kalita Wave filters before brewing?
Rinsing is optional but recommended. The paper is thin and produces minimal papery taste on its own, but a quick rinse also preheats your dripper and helps the filter sit properly in the brewer — both of which contribute to a more consistent extraction.
What's the difference between the 155 and 185 sizes?
The 155 is designed for single servings of around 200–300ml, while the 185 accommodates larger brews of 300–500ml. Choose based on how much coffee you typically brew in one session rather than the number of cups.
Can I use Kalita Wave filters in other drippers?
Yes. The 185 fits the Orea V3 and V4, Origami Dripper (M size), April Brewer, Fellow Stagg [X], and other flat-bottom brewers designed for 185-size papers. The 155 is compatible with the Torch Mountain Dripper, Origami Dripper (S size), and similar smaller flat-bottom brewers. Always check your dripper's recommended paper size before ordering.
What's the difference between boxed (50) and bagged (100)?
The filters themselves are identical — the only difference is packaging and quantity. The boxed version comes in a rigid box of 50, which keeps the filters protected and flat. The bagged version contains 100 filters in a resealable bag, offering better value if you brew regularly. Both sizes are available in 155 and 185.
Are Kalita Wave filters environmentally friendly?
Yes. The filters are made from oxygen-bleached pulp and carry FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, meaning the paper is sourced from responsibly managed forests. Oxygen bleaching avoids the use of chlorine, making them a cleaner choice than non-certified alternatives.
