Keeping the puck level is just as important as keeping the pressure consistent, and a wide 69mm self-levelling collar handles that. It holds the 58.4mm stainless steel base square and centred in the basket, with less than 0.05mm between base and collar, so the coffee bed comes out flat rather than sloped. As you lift away, a chamfered lip breaks the suction so the puck stays exactly where it is.

This version pairs precision-milled stainless steel with a white anodised aluminium grip. It's a clean, bright finish that works beautifully on white, cream or stainless steel setups. The rounded top and soft contours make it comfortable to use, and at around 640g it has a reassuring weight on the counter. What is an impact tamper?

It's a tamper that uses springs, rather than your own pressure, to compress the coffee. You press down on the handle until the internal springs release a consistent impact into the coffee bed, then they reset automatically for the next shot. That way every puck gets the same force, whoever's tamping.

Is the tamping force adjustable?

No, the force is fixed by a single calibrated spring setup. That's the point: removing variation means every shot is compressed the same way. If you'd rather fine-tune tamp depth, the Timemore x Anthony Douglas FLOW Tamper offers adjustment in 0.025mm steps.

Which machines does it fit?

It's made for 58mm portafilters, the standard size on commercial machines and many home machines such as the Lelit Victoria and Sage Dual Boiler. It isn't suitable for 54mm portafilters, such as those on the Sage Barista Pro.

Can I use it with precision baskets?

Yes. The 58.4mm base fills precision baskets such as our VST Precision Filter Baskets right to the wall, so the edges of the puck are compressed as firmly as the middle.

Why does a level tamp matter?

If the coffee bed is sloped, one side is thinner than the other, and water takes the easy route through the thin side. That's called channelling, and it leaves part of the puck under-extracted and part over-extracted. The 69mm self-levelling collar keeps the base flat so the bed is even every time.

Is the white version any different from the black?

No, apart from the colour. Both share the same 58.4mm flat base, spring mechanism, collar and silicone base. If black suits your setup better, the black Impulse Impact Tamper is also available.

How do I keep the white finish looking clean?

Wipe the grip with a soft, lightly damp cloth after use, and brush away any coffee between the base and the collar. Avoid abrasive pads and the dishwasher, which can mark anodised aluminium and damage the spring mechanism.

Impact tamper or traditional tamper?
