  • Barista Hustle Cupping Bowls rethink one of the most overlooked tools in coffee. Instead of traditional ceramic or glass, they're made from food-grade, BPA-free high-density polyethylene (HDPE), so they're tough enough to survive being knocked off the table and light enough to carry a full set across the room. Each bowl holds 220ml to the rim, and Barista Hustle makes them so consistently that every bowl holds the same volume to within a millilitre. When you're comparing coffees side by side, that consistency matters: same dose, same water, same bowl, so the only variable left is the coffee itself. Choose matte white in a pack of 24, or black in a pack of 12.

A ceramic cupping bowl weighs 250g or more and soaks up heat from your water before brewing has even started. At around 43g, these bowls have far less thermal mass, and Barista Hustle says brew temperatures run around 10°C higher than in room-temperature ceramic. Starting hotter helps each cup show more of what's really in the coffee. The black bowls are coloured with an FDA-approved pigment, Cabot Black Pearls 4350, that adds no taste, colour or odour.

The bowls stack neatly for storage, with moulded ridges that let air circulate so they dry properly between sessions, and they're dishwasher safe and fully recyclable at the end of their life. At 220ml they comfortably fit the classic cupping recipe of around 11 to 12g of coffee to 200ml of water, filling to just below the rim. For the slurping, our Acme cupping spoon was the official spoon of the 2025 World Cup Tasters Championship. Whether you're running quality control in a roastery, cupping with your café team or tasting through a Filter Tasting Pack at home, there's a set to suit how many coffees you cup at once.

  • Why are these cupping bowls made from plastic rather than ceramic?

HDPE is light, practically unbreakable and has far less thermal mass than ceramic or glass. A ceramic bowl absorbs heat from your brew water the moment you pour, and these bowls take much less. Barista Hustle says the result is a brew temperature around 10°C higher than in room-temperature ceramic. If you'd rather cup in ceramic, or only need a few bowls, our porcelain Acme Taster cups are sold individually, and the Medium 210ml is the size for cupping.

Will the plastic affect the taste of the coffee?

No. The bowls are made from food-grade, BPA-free HDPE, the same plastic used for milk bottles and chopping boards, and it doesn't add taste, colour or odour. The black bowls use an FDA-approved pigment that's neutral in the same way.

What's the difference between the white and black bowls?

Only the colour and pack size. Both are made from the same food-grade HDPE, with the same 220ml capacity and dimensions. White bowls come in packs of 24, ideal for larger cupping tables, and black bowls in packs of 12, a good size for home cupping or smaller sessions.

How much coffee and water should I use per bowl?

The SCA's current cupping standard, SCA-102, sets the dose by the bowl's capacity to the rim: 8.25g of coffee per 150ml. For these 220ml bowls that's about 12.1g, with water at around 93°C poured right to the rim. Barista Hustle's own suggestion is 12g of coffee to 200g of water, which sits just below the rim. Whichever you choose, keep it the same across every bowl.

Are these bowls suitable for SCA cupping?

They're built for everyday cupping, but a formal SCA assessment asks for something different. SCA-102, which replaced the SCA's 2004 cupping protocol in 2024, specifies tempered glass or ceramic vessels of 200 to 350ml with a top diameter of 75 to 90mm. These bowls fit the volume, but they're HDPE and 95mm across. The standard also puts quick quality-control cupping outside its scope, and that's where these bowls earn their keep. If you need to cup to the letter of the standard, our porcelain Acme Taster cups in Medium 210ml are 80mm across.

Why does volume consistency matter for cupping?

Cupping only works if every bowl is brewed identically. If one bowl holds more water than another, its strength and extraction will differ, and you could end up judging the vessel rather than the coffee. Matching volumes to within 1ml removes that variable. SCA-102 asks for every cup on the table to be identical in volume, dimensions and material for the same reason.

    Are the bowls dishwasher safe?

Yes, they're dishwasher safe. Stack them to store, and the moulded ridges keep a small gap between bowls so air can circulate and they dry properly.

How many cupping bowls do I need?

Under SCA-102, a formal quality score uses five bowls per coffee, so the cupper can judge how uniform it is from cup to cup, while a descriptive tasting uses three to five. Three is common for everyday quality control. At three bowls a coffee, a pack of 12 covers four coffees and a pack of 24 covers eight.

Where can I learn to cup properly?

Start with our guide, What is coffee cupping?, which takes you from grinding to breaking the crust to the slurp. If you've wondered what the scores on our coffee pages mean, read What do coffee cupping scores actually mean?. Our team also runs SCA coffee courses, including the SCA Brewing Professional course. To get started at home, grab a Filter Tasting Pack and cup the four coffees side by side.
