  • Cool, quiet and a little like a river-smoothed stone, the Kalita MI Ceramic Dripper in Sand Grey is a Kalita Wave made the slow way. Each one is shaped and fired in Dachi, in the Toki area of Gifu Prefecture, part of the Tono region where Mino-yaki pottery has been made for around 1,300 years. Turn it over and you will find a DACHI stamp on the base, a mark of exactly where it came from.

The Sand Grey finish comes from a Yohen glaze, which reacts in the kiln and leaves every dripper with its own shading, so the grey can read lighter or deeper from one piece to the next. The foot is left bare, giving a quiet contrast between the smooth glazed body and the matte clay where it meets your mug or server. It suits a pared-back brew station: a steel kettle, a glass server and nothing fussy.

Functionally, it brews like the Wave you know: a flat coffee bed, three outlet holes and Wave filters whose folds keep the paper off the walls for an even, repeatable extraction. Kalita has made the MI's holes 2mm larger than the standard Wave to help draw out flavour and aroma, and the knock-on effect is a steadier, more forgiving drawdown that is less inclined to stall. It runs a touch quicker than a standard Wave, so if your usual recipe finishes early, tighten the grind slightly. Preheat with hot water before brewing, as ceramic holds its heat well once it is warm. The 155 suits single cups and the 185 suits larger brews and sharing; use Kalita Wave filter papers in the matching size. Prefer something warmer? The same dripper comes in Sand Brown.

For serving, the Kalita Jug 400 Glass Coffee Server pairs neatly with the 155, and the Kalita Jug 500 Glass Coffee Server handles a full 185 brew. You will find filter papers, servers and more Wave drippers, including the Kalita Wave stainless steel dripper, in our Kalita brewing collection, and our Kalita Wave brew guide walks you through recipes for both sizes.

  • Should I choose the 155 or the 185?

The 155 is built for one: a single mug, typically brewed with around 12 to 20g of coffee. The 185 has a wider bed and more height, so it comfortably handles around 20 to 30g and is the better pick if you brew for two or like a big morning cup. If you are unsure, the 185 is the more flexible of the two.

Which filter papers does it use?

Kalita Wave filters in the matching size: 155 papers for the 155 dripper and 185 papers for the 185. Cone filters will not sit properly in the flat bed. We stock both sizes, boxed and bagged, in our Kalita Wave filter papers listing.

How is the MI different from other Kalita Wave drippers?

The brewing geometry is the same flat-bottomed, three-hole Wave, but the MI is handmade Mino-yaki pottery rather than glass or steel, and Kalita has made its outlet holes 2mm larger than the standard Wave to help release flavour and aroma. If you want something lighter and more robust for travel, the Kalita Wave Stainless Steel Dripper is the one to look at; the Kalita Wave Glass Dripper is the most affordable way into the Wave system.

Does the MI brew faster than a standard Kalita Wave?

A little. The larger outlet holes let water leave the bed slightly more freely, so on the same recipe you can expect a marginally quicker finish than a standard ceramic Wave. The bigger difference is consistency: the flow stays steadier and is less likely to stall, which makes the MI a forgiving dripper to dial in. If your brews start finishing early, go a step finer on the grinder.

What recipe should I start with?

Our Kalita Wave brew guide has step-by-step recipes for both sizes: 15g of coffee to 250g of water at 93°C for the 155, and 30g to 500g for the 185, with full pour timings and tips for adjusting your brew. Because the MI drains a touch more freely than a standard Wave, expect to land at the quicker end of the guide's brew times; if it runs faster still, go a step finer on the grinder.

What is the difference between Sand Grey and Sand Brown?

Only the colour. Both are the same handmade MI dripper with identical sizes, holes and filters. Sand Grey is the cooler, more understated of the two; if you would rather have a warm, earthy tone, take a look at the Kalita MI Ceramic Dripper in Sand Brown.

Will my dripper look exactly like the photos?

Not quite, and that is part of the appeal. The Yohen glaze changes colour as it fires, so shade and depth vary from piece to piece, and as a handmade item you can expect small variations in glaze and finish. None of this affects how it brews.

    Is it dishwasher safe?

No. Wash it by hand with a little washing-up liquid and a soft sponge, avoiding abrasive scourers and cream cleaners, and let it dry fully before putting it away. Avoid leaving it to soak for long periods, as pottery can absorb water and staining.

Do I need to preheat it?

We would recommend it. Ceramic pulls heat out of your brew water until it warms up, so pour hot water through the filter paper and dripper before adding coffee. It rinses any papery taste from the filter at the same time; just discard the rinse water before you brew.

What does the DACHI stamp on the base mean?

It marks the dripper as made in Dachi, a pottery town in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, and part of Japan's Mino-yaki ceramic tradition.
